Train running with the ball and passing accuracy in dynamic situations for young players |
Dribbling |
Prepare, on a 20x20-meter/22x22-yard playing area bounded by four markers, two concentric squares. Delineate the larger square with the four cones and the smaller square with the remaining four markers. The two squares should have sides of 4 and 8 meters (4 and 9 yards), respectively. Divide the players into two teams: 6 attackers against 5 defenders (red jerseys). Arrange the six balls in the central square. Players start outside the playing area without the ball.
This exercise is useful to improve running with the ball especially in the younger age groups. The aim of the defending team is to get the balls out of the innermost square, while the attacking team will bring them back in through precise passes.
- The defenders stand between the perimeters of the two concentric squares, defending the zone and trying to intercept passes from the attackers. The defenders must lead the ball beyond the outer perimeter of the playing area
- Play begins at the coach's command; players start from the outside and continue the situation until the two minutes are up
- Passing by the attackers must be from outside the largest square
- The ball must be led by defenders outside the playing area
- Defenders may not stand inside the smaller square
- During the defenders' possession, the attackers cannot counter them
- Increase or decrease the size of the field
- Introduce an active duel component during running with the ball phases
- Keep a good pace throughout the drill
- Players should enjoy and be involved in the challenge with teammates
- Accuracy of passes while avoiding interception by defenders
- Run with the ball fast and return to position at maximum speed
- Allow players proper recovery time
