How to train the defensive line to negative transition in outnumbered situations |

Deploy a line of 4 defenders plus a midfielder protecting the defensive line (red players in the picture) to defend the regulatory goal. Deploy against the defenders 3 midfielders and 3 forwards positioned simulating the 4-3-3 line-up (white players in the picture). There will be a starting situation of 6 v 5 in favor of the offensive players. Near the lateral strip (in the example to the left of the goal), or on both lateral strips, about 25 meters/27 yards from the end line, place two posts 10 meters/11 yards apart in a vertical line (as in the picture). The goalkeeper defends the regulatory goal and play with the defenders. The action starts with the ball put into play by the goalkeeper.
- The goalkeeper passes the ball with the hands to the right lateral defender, who dribbles to the first post, stops the ball and, before re-entering the game, goes around the next post that is 10 meters/11 yards away with a sprint
- The forward who recovers the ball left by the defender aims for the free space along the side, forcing the nearest central defender to come out to the side
- The movement of the central defender is the signal for the central midfielder to enter the defensive line (covering the position left vacant by the central defender) until the right side defender recovers their position covering the 4-man defensive line
- The forwards (white players), having won the ball, play for the goal in the regulatory goal
- When the action is over, the action is restarted by the goalkeeper who will play the ball on the opposite side
- Rotate the positions of the defending midfielders
- Rotate the positions of the defensive midfielder with those of the attacking midfielders
- The defensive midfielder's entry into the defensive line must be timed correctly and coordinated with the central defender's exit laterally
- Take care of the rise of the defensive line of 4
- Take care of position taking in the box
- Encourage the imagination, unpredictability and movement without the ball of the forwards in attacking the goal
- Stimulate the transition phase with fast attack and immediate defensive adaptation
