Small-sided game to improve ball possession and transitions from defensive to offensive phase |
Finishing, Mobility, 3 versus 3 |
In the area prepared for the drill, create a 40x30-meter/44x33-yard field placing four cones at the vertices. Place a regulatory goal in the center of one side of the field (possibly take advantage of the goal on the end line). In the center of the playing area, create a horizontal strip 3 meters deep with the four markers. The playing field is thus divided into three zones, the middle one being the neutral zone (white in the picture). The players are divided into three teams of three each (red, white and green in the picture). The goalkeeper stands in defense of the goal while three players stand in the penalty area (white in the example). The other six players divided into two teams position themselves in the opposite area, away from the goal. The game begins with one team, in the area away from the goal, in possession of the ball (red team in the picture).
- The teams' objectives are: score a goal in the regulatory goal and in the area opposite to the goal (taking the ball across the end line opposite to the goal)
- The team starting in possession of the ball must score in the goal (reds in the example)
- The team in the area has to defend the goal and try to steal the ball (whites in the example), if they win the ball they restart by attacking the opposite half of the field for the goal (positive transition); the third team (greens in the picture) has to prevent the goal from the opponents and win the ball to attack the goal. The team that previously lost the ball stands in defense of the goal.
- The team on the end line (green) must try not to be overtaken and win the ball, if they steal the ball they must try to attack the goal defended by the team that started the game (red)
- This continues for the duration of the series with rotation of positions by the three trios of players
- In case of a goal or point scored in the end zone, the team that was defending resumes play in search of the goal or end zone point
- No player may stand in the central neutral zone
- Limit the number of ball touches
- A lot of work is done in 3 v 3 situations
- This drill enforces high rhythms
- Allow players freedom of action
- Rotate the team starting the game after each set
- Take care of the defensive and offensive phases (three-player tactics)
- Take care of the positive and negative transition phases
