Create a 30x40-meter/33x44-yard playing field with markers. Again with the markers, create two side zones about 2 meters/yards deep (top and bottom in the picture). Divide the central area into two zones: left side zone and right side zone. Finally in the middle of the playing area form a 6x8-meter/6.5x9-yard central rectangle with four markers. The nine players line up on the field divided into two teams: a team of six players (white in the picture) for maintaining ball possession and a team of three players (red in the picture) for pressing and recovering the ball. A 6 v 3 ball possession is played with movement constraints and mandatory rotations of positions during the course of the exercise.
6 v 3 ball possession with the six players of the team working to maintain ball possession distributed as follows: 2 within the side zones (one on each side) and 4 within the central area of the playing field, positioned two in the left side zone and two in the right side zone. The three red players who bring pressure in an attempt to regain the ball move freely throughout the playing area. Encourage ball possession by creating continuous passing lines.
Two strategies:
- "I play inside, I go out": If a central player of the inner 4 succeeds in serving a teammate with a pass through the lines inside the central rectangle (1), they must then quickly rotate positions with the player who is positioned in the nearest outer side zone (2)
"I play inside, I go out"
- "I play out, I go inside": If a central player passes the ball to one of the outside "jokers" positioned within the sidebands (1) they must then compulsorily lose the marker by moving into the central rectangle (2), consequently, a closer teammate positioned in the same portion of the field must give lateral support by lowering to the position previously occupied by the teammate (2). In this way, the outside "joker" in the side zone, now in possession of the ball, is guaranteed both a central passing line for a through pass and lateral passing lines on both sides to the right and left
"I play out, I go inside"
- White players should always be placed two per sector (right and left lateral)
- Free ball touches available to players in possession
- At the end of each series change the three players (red) who act as defenders and carry the pressure
- The team in possession gets 1 point each time it manages to serve a teammate in the central rectangle by performing the predetermined rotation
- The team in possession also gets 1 point when it manages to make 10 consecutive passes without interception by opponents
- Limitate the number of ball touches
- Involve the opposite outside player in the rotations as well (for example, at the time the ball is played to the nearest outside "joker" player, once the movement within the center rectangle is made, the opposite outside "joker" player can enter the zone where the rotation takes place and the player who has entered the central rectangle continues the run by occupying the opposite side zone left free - rotation between the center player and the opposite "joker")
- Urge teammates to clear as many passing lines as possible for the ball carrier. This drill helps the creation of triangles. The drill has a significant cognitive load because players always have to make a choice looking at movements made by teammates
- Stimulate mobility by taking advantage of the width of the field and staggering for the team during ball possession
- Encourage speed of movement with good intensity and quality of ball transmission to evade opposition pressing
- Also work on the pressure phase of the three defenders: it should be well organized and intense
